DIY Under-Desk Gadget Mount

Posted on February 19, 2007. Filed under: Cabling, Design, Desk, Gadgets |

Organized gadget owner Van Mardian cleared his desktop by mounting all his peripherals – external hard drives, USB hubs, network router – under his desk with pegboard and wire.

For under 35 bucks, Mardian hung pegboard under his Ikea desk and threaded wire through it to stow all his gadgets and wires, completely clearing the top area. This coupled with Adam’s cord management solution would make for an attractive, sparse desktop with lots of elbow room.

30 USB port-powered “BBQ”

Posted on August 24, 2006. Filed under: Cooking, Gadgets |

Ok, so it’s really more of a hotplate than a Barbeque, but for sheer excessiveness and USB-ness this DIY project from Kaizo Aho Ichidai cannot be denied. After not surprisingly failing to get enough juice from a single 500mw USB port to fry an egg, Kaizo went all out and dropped six USB expansion cards into his PC, giving him a ridiculous total of 30 USB ports, all of which got re-wired to a modified USB cup warmer. In no time he had a hot, albeit small meal, and as far as well can tell, a still-working computer. Needless to say, this is one project we don’t recommend trying at home, unless you’ve already managed to build a USB-powered fire extinguisher.

Microsoft Zune: Details and Predictions

Posted on August 20, 2006. Filed under: Gadgets |

A number of new details have come to light about Microsoft’s upcoming Zune MP3 player, such as the fact that its bundled earbuds have magnets which make them stick together, the “scrollwheel” is actually a four-way rocker button, the device itself has a magnet on its back (possibly for earbud stickage?), there’s a grip on the back for watching videos in landscape mode, and EMI will pre-pack the device with music videos. And like the Neuros devices before it, the Zune will receive and transmit FM radio, so that you don’t have to buy an accessory in order to hear static-y digital music over your car stereo.

Gizmodo even scored an exclusive photo — taken in black and white because the Microsoft employee who apparently leaked it didn’t want to get busted (each of the 150 beta units evidently has its own color scheme, to discourage such leaks). Nice work, Gizmodo. Or, if the Microsoft leaker actually works with its PR company, congratulations is due there as well; this photo is adding considerably to the buzz around Zune.

Keyboard with 127 tiny displays

Posted on August 20, 2006. Filed under: Gadgets |

What would you say if somebody presented a keyboard where every key was a little display? This ultra cool keyboard from Optimus has that – 127 tiny little OLED displays. Too bad it’s just a prototype, and it most probably will be very expensive! But it’s a brilliant idea, even though I’m one of those who hardly ever look at the keyboard while I’m typing.

The ‘Optimus Keyboard is a extremely popular product, the first time it was published at digg.com it got over 5000 diggs and 300 comments in the first 24 hours.
